The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
